Anniversary and Baby Food

September 23, 2008 by Laura (The Mama)

Eric and I are going out to dinner since today is our 2 year wedding anniversary, we have been together for almost 10 years! I can’t believe how fast time goes!
Speaking of fast…Austin will be 6 months old in a week! Holy cow! He is sitting up on his own, we can see his first tooth getting ready to break through, and we are sloooooowly trying solids (we had an allergy issue in the very beginning with apples). I thought no one was supposed to be allergic to apples! We are hoping that it is just an aversion or intolerance, so we will try them again later.
I have been making my own baby food and I wanted to share a few things. I had always intended on doing this but it has much more meaning since I was not able to successfully breastfeed. That still makes me sad, but I feel like I am really doing what is best for him when I am making his food myself. Not to mention that it is way cheaper than buying the prepackaged stuff! Seriously, if you had to formula feed you can understand! Here is a little breakdown. We get the big cans of Enfamil at Sam’s Club: One 38oz can of powdered formula for $32 each week! That’s right, over $120 a month to feed this little guy! We knew that formula wasn’t cheap, but I had no choice. I wish I had been able to breastfeed but since I couldn’t I am still grateful that I can make his food instead of buying the jarred kind. At least if I make my own baby food I know I can cut out bad spots, or not use over or under ripe fruits or veggies. So, I get what fruits and veggies I can fresh from a local grower, or I get it from Sam’s Club. I scrub it clean, peel it, chop it, puree it, and freeze it! It takes less than an hour to make enough servings to last a few months! I love it! BTW, 9 pears will make enough ice cube size servings to fill a gallon sized ziplock baggie! Bottom line? Formula is expensive and so is store bought baby food, so make your own, it is so worth it!
So tonight my Mother In-Law is going to watch Austin so that Eric and I can go out and have dinner for our anniversary! I can hardly wait!
